We have been seeing this beauty at our tall phlox over the last few weeks, as have many gardeners reported also.

I wondered though, what he looked like as a caterpillar and to my surprise he turned out to be a hornworm, I wonder how many of these I have squashed over the years thinking they were the dreaded tomato hornworm.

BUT, there is a difference in these caterpillars . . . . . . .

To the left is a picture of a tomato hornworm and the above picture is a Five-Spotted Moth that it morphs into.

I'm thinking of being more careful about what I squash from now on, even though I don't think (after some research) these beautiful moths eat tomato vines.

You had me laughing...such a adorable post! I don't know if I can make the same promise not to squash slimy things..lol but then I don't see those pretty creatures just yet...lol This year has been grasshoppers...lots and lots of grasshoppers!

You take absolutely stunning pictures by the way!

Thank you for the very nice comment. Surprisingly, we haven't been bothered by very many grasshoppers. I went back to a previous post (For the Love of Gardening) and looked at the picture of the grasshopper I found in the lemon grass, it made me think, I wonder if he was so yellow because he had been eating lemon grass.

Your captures of this lovely moth are spectacular. Mine are dining on monarda and I can't get close enough for a great pic. And now I know what caterpillars to look for and avoid as well. Love these moths.

Thank you, actually I was lucky enough to have two of them in the phlox at the same time. I still took a lot of pics to get that good one!

Those treaded hornworms, I didn't take that photo though, it was a free photo off the web and I couldn't track down the photographer. I do take most of the photos on my site and rarely use other pictures. The pictures of the snowberry are mine. I am glad you visited my blog, I hope you are following all my posts. Thank you for the comment!

Caterpillars do turn out to be the most exquisite butterfly or moth - great call! I do appreciate you sharing with Home and Garden Thursday,
Kathy
