Crocus Fall Planting Tips

Planting Crocus in rocks and clay can be a challenge. I have found an easy way to plant bulbs of any kind, and for that matter, sometimes I even use this method to plant plants.
Some bulbs look best in a more naturalized style, and this includes crocus. To get this look depends on how many bulbs you are planting and the size of the planting area. I put the bulbs in my hand and give them a toss, and where they land is where I plant the bulbs. (Notice the screwdriver and the hammer)

I then push the screwdriver in the ground and if it doesn't go in easily, I use a hammer and pound on the screwdriver for a deeper hole.

The next problem we have living in the woods, are those pesky squirrels. Yes, I know squirrels are everywhere, but we have more than our fair share, and they will dig up every bulb if we don't put a screen over them. Okay, that's it, now for the long days of winter. Just make sure you take off the screen before the bulbs start to peek their little heads out. Here in the Ozarks that is the first of March.

I've been struggling with hard clay soil, rocks, buried landscape lighting wires, and sprinkler pipe using everything from a shovel, bulb auger, etc. What a clever and simple trick to just use a screw driver and hammer!!! I will try that this weekend and hope for much less frustration. Thanks!

Great. My idea came from your same frustration.
